Jimmy is the son of Cornelis Leendert Smits and Emilina Smits. He was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York, where he spent his childhood with his two sisters, Yvonne and Diana.
Since his father was of Dutch descent and his mother was from Puerto Rico, Smits holds a mixed ethnicity.
Smits is currently running at 67, and his birthdate was July 9, 1955. Growing up in a strict and well-mannered family, he was always directed towards his goal and ambition.
After completing his bachelor’s degree from Brooklyn College in 1980 and an MFA from Cornell University in 1982, he was approached for the first episode of Miami Vice in 1984.
His early role in Miami Vice had served as a stepping stone to his blossoming career. Following that, his extraordinary performances in several dramas have received massive gratification from the viewers.
Talking about his married life, he tied the knot with Barbara Smits in 1981. They are blessed with two children, Taina and Joaquin. Although Barbara was his high school girlfriend, their marriage could not last forever, and, sadly, they got separated in 1987.
