J.T. Poston is the son of James Tyree Sr. His father, who may have played golf as a child, has always been a loving father to him. It could also explain why Poston became interested in golf at a young age.
Cheryl Poston, the golfer’s mother, gave birth to him in Hickory, North Carolina. When Poston was two years old, his grandfather, Charles Cunningham’s doctor, gave him plastic sets of clubs.
Charles also chose golf instructor John McNeely to train Poston when he turned seven. The golfer is the Poston family’s eldest son, with two younger siblings, Bo Poston and Bailey Poston.
The golfer’s grandfather always joins him at the golf tournament. Charles made sure to witness his grandson’s victory in the Wyndham Championship.
J.T. set an NCHSAA golf tournament record while competing for Hickory High School in high school. He played for Western Carolina University in college, winning six times, including two consecutive Southern Conference championships.
