After it came to light in 2018 that Jeff Fager had sent Duncan threatening text messages, he was removed from his position as executive producer on the 60 Minutes show. In September of 2018, Duncan revealed the contents of these text messages. Several of Fager’s female employees had accused him of engaging in sexual harassment at some point in the past. Duncan was reporting on the event when Fager issued a threat to her by saying, “If you repeat these false claims without any of your own reporting to back them up, you will be accountable for injuring me.” Fager said this while Duncan was covering the story. Be careful. There are people who have been laid off who are actively working to cause me harm, and if you pass on these negative statements without conducting your own reporting to back them up, that will become a significant problem.” Following the disclosure of these text conversations, Duncan received commendation from the National Association of Black Journalists for her coverage of a segment of the Me Too campaign. Fager rejected the initial charges, but later revealed that he was the one who had sent Duncan the threatening messages.

As soon as Duncan disclosed Fager’s answer to her, it sparked discussions about the consequences of reporting for the #MeToo movement. It was a contributing factor in the development of the #reportingMeToo hashtag on Twitter. A discourse was also started as a result of this incident regarding the fact that women are more likely to be the targets of sexual harassment incidents and to report messages sent by the accused.
