Kevin and Laurie Lane, who are business owners, were on season 14 episode 3 of “Shark Tank” to talk about their product, Create A Castle.
Building castles out of sand or snow can be hard, but Create A Castle makes it easy and quick to do the same thing. Naturally, the clever products got a lot of attention, so we decided to find out more about the company and how much it has grown since it was on the show.
Who are they and what do they do in Create a Castle?
Kevin Lane got his Fine Arts degree from Green Mountain College. He then went to Western Connecticut State University to get his Bachelor of Fine Arts degree. From 1997 to 2000, he worked as a Website Designer and Director of Design for a few different companies before becoming a Manager of Information Architecture and Web Design at LifeCare. In 2010, he started his own web production and design company called Code Hounds LLC. It is based in New Milford, Connecticut. Besides still working there, he and Laurie Lane started Create A Castle, LLC in June of 2017.
On the other hand, Laurie got her Bachelor of Arts in Retail Management from the University of Connecticut in 1991 and then went to work as a Store Manager at The Gap. In 1993, she became a District Manager for the Walt Disney Company. In June 2010, she started working as an account manager for Code Hounds LLC, which is owned by her husband, Kevin Lane. Laurie is the account manager right now, but she is also a co-owner of Create A Castle, LLC and works as an Independent Vacation Planner.
Kevin Lane said that when he was on vacation in Laguna Beach, California, he saw a father and son building a sandcastle together. Even though they seemed to be having a lot of fun at first, they soon got angry when the castle kept falling down. Kevin has always been interested in castles, and that, along with his need to solve problems as a web developer, made him work hard to find a solution. He and his wife Laurie finally put their heads together and came up with the idea for Create A Castle.
Create A Castle gives you everything you need to build a castle, making it easy, fun, and full of details. Instead of the usual bucket or box, the Create A Castle kit comes with casts that are very strong and can be broken apart by their hinge. Before putting the cast on the ground and gently unhinging it, the user must fill it with sand or snow. Also, each cast has fine details like brick walls, battlements, and the like, and the kit comes in different versions that add more buildings based on the price.

What happened to Create a Castle?
Kevin and Laurie Lane were surprised and glad to see how well Create A Castle did after it came out in 2017. In 2018, the product was featured on the TV show “Live With Kelly and Ryan,” which helped it become even more popular. Even Kevin couldn’t stay out of the spotlight. In both 2018 and 2019, he was chosen as the Connecticut Entrepreneur of the Year for Community Favorite Venture. Create A Castle also won the International Toy of the Year award from the Toy Association in 2020.
At the moment, the kits are sold on Create A Castle’s website, on Amazon, and in many stores across the United States, such as Dick’s Sporting Goods, Walmart, Barnes and Noble, and others. Reports also say that Kevin and Laurie send their goods to Australia through the Japanese company Tomy, which makes toys and games.
Customers who are interested in the Create A Castle kits should know that they come in different sizes and cost between $19.99 and $49.99. The company also sells tool kits, castle flags, castle lights, bags, t-shirts, and other items with prices between $3.95 and $34.99. Create A Castle’s rise to fame has been amazing to watch, and we wish Kevin and Laurie the best of luck in everything they do in the future.
Sand and snow castle toys have been around for a long time, but Create a Castle makes molds with more details that make it easier to make beautiful castles. Kevin and Laurie Lane, the company’s founders, were on season 14 and made a deal with Kendra Scott. Create a Castle is worth about $2 million as of 2022.
Kevin Lane is married to Laurie Lane, and they live in New Milford, Connecticut. We don’t know much about the husband’s education, but Laurie went to the University of Connecticut and got a degree in retail management.
Laurie’s first job was as the manager of a store at The Gap. She was also hired by The Walt Disney Company as a district manager. Then, she worked at MEI-Travel & Mouse Fan Travel as an independent trip planner.
Kevin has a lot of experience with web design, and Digital Madness was where he got his first job in the field. Later, companies like LifeCare, WebMediaBrands, and Jupitermedia hired him. In 2010, he started his first business, Code Hounds, with the help of his wife, who worked as an account manager.
Kevin loved building sand castles when he wasn’t making websites. But, like a lot of people, he didn’t like sand castle buckets because you had to hit them more than once to make the castle.
The two of them made a variety of castle molds that can be filled with sand or snow and then opened on the side. They made little castles that were the right size and shape, and they started selling them in 2017.
After being on ABC’s Live with Kelly and Ryan, the new business got over 500 orders a year later. The Toy Association named the product “Toy of the Year” in 2020. This helped the founders get a deal with TOMY Australia to sell their goods.
Create A Castle has sold a fair amount of copies, and it’s on track to be the best in its niche. This could be why the entrepreneurs wanted a Shark to join them.
After Kevin and Laurie Lane got on the show, they were asked to start filming in July. And before their episode aired, Kevin made a 15-foot sandcastle on a nearby beach to thank the people of New Milford for their help.
He hired Dan Anderson, a sand artist, to do the job. It’s a kind of public relations announcement for their appearance on Shark Tank.
Even though their episode just came out, fans of the show are likely to order a lot more from them. Create A Castle has only three employees, so it might be hard for them to handle shipping in the short term.
You can buy their product on Amazon, at Barnes and Noble, on CreateACastle.com, and in a few small toy stores in the US. Because they made a deal with TOMY, they will be in stores all over Australia by Christmas. Australia has a lot of beautiful beaches, so it should be one of the company’s biggest markets.
Over 540 Amazon reviews have given Create a Castle an average rating of 4.3. Create a Castle is worth about $2 million right now.
The company that changed the way people build sand c
astles has done it again. This time, they are taking their product to the set of “Shark Tank” in the hopes of going global and becoming the best toy company in the world.
A few years ago, Create A Castle came out with an innovative mold kit that lets kids and their families build sand or snow castles outside. Since then, the company has made its first product better, won a TOTY Award, and been chosen by the Toy Insider team as a top summer toy. With the Create A Castle BuildMaster Indoor Activity Kit, kids can now make complex tabletop castles using a patented sand compound and mold method for fun that doesn’t make a mess. Can the inventor sell the Sharks on a product that promises to make trips to the beach more fun?
What is a Sand Castle Molds Create a Castle?
A father and his young son are going to the beach with buckets, shovels, hand rakes, trowels, spatulas, paintbrushes, and… a melon baller? They have a lot of fun building a sand castle together. Afterward. Soon, there will be too many crumbling towers, broken walls, flooded moats, broken shovels, and high tide. Junior gave up and is now looking for crabs on the beach. Dad is very serious about building a castle.
Kevin Lane saw a very similar thing happen in the California town of Laguna Beach. He could understand how the man felt. He knew how stressful and sad it was because he had always liked building sand castles. As a web developer, he was also used to coming up with new ways to solve problems with technology. So, he set up Create A Castle, a website for both beginners and experts, kids and adults, sand and snow. No sand? No snow? No big deal. There is also a kit for use inside.
The Split-Apart Ultra Durable Instead of a bucket, a cast piece with two quick-opening hinges was used. You can put sand in it, take the mold off, and right away have a brick tower. Brick battlements are put up, and corbels add to the look of the structure. A mesh backpack makes it easy to carry all the parts, while a window cutter makes beautiful windows and a multipurpose tool gets rid of any leftover sand.
Each kit comes with 2.65 lbs of Castle Magic sand or snow, six different molds, three keys, and a variety of extras like tower toppers and a pack and design tool. At first glance, the sand or snow may look like other materials that can be used again, but they are not. People would notice right away that Castle Magic sand is sticky and doesn’t “flow” like other mixtures. This is because it is designed to keep its shape while taking on the fine details of the molds that come with it.
To start building, kids can lock a mold with one of the keys that come with the set. Then, they can fill the mold with sand or snow to start building. One tip from a pro is to use the pack and design tool to tightly pack the first quarter-inch or so of the compound in each mold. This will make sure that you succeed. Once the mold is full, you can flip it over, take the key out, and open it to see a column or wall. From there, you can start building, making the structure bigger and adding decorations or hand-made parts to it.
Even though the kit is meant to bring the fun of building a sand castle inside, families love using the playmat that comes with it as a base to build outside on picnic tables. Once it is built, a castle can stay up for up to two weeks and keep its shape. Also, if you put any leftover compound in one of the bags that come with the kit, it won’t dry out, so kids can keep building and destroying new kingdoms for hours of fun.
